I have so much to say about this amazing game, but for now I’ll just leave it at this:
Final jam. Robot Unicorn Attack is jamming, but she’s starting in the penalty box with a few seconds left. I’m pivoting. We successfully stall the pack off the line. She comes flying out of the box, passes me the jammer panty, I throw it on my head, and take off to score 15 points.
STAR PASS. It happened. For realz. My derby life is now complete.
So so amazing to watch. It was a beautiful star pass. I think our bench was as excited to see it as Boston’s!
This is me being tough. I will need this toughness today when I play in my first actual bout EVER! Maine Calamity Janes vs. Boston B-Party. I can not wait! Now to finish my pre-bout mix, and chill.
So excited!!! I’ve been rostered for my first ever bout! Maine Roller Derby’s Calamity Janes (my team) vs. Boston Derby Dames B Party. This shall be epic. I fully anticipate being schooled by Boston, but how much fun will that be? So. April 3, 2011. Be there.

Coming right up on 10/9 is Maine Roller Derby’s 3rd annual Wicked vs. Good bout. I won’t be playing *yet*, but the league is divided into teams for what has historically been the most epic, fun bout of the fall season!
AS a child of the 1970s, I spent a number of birthday parties in striped tube socks and bright white roller skates, whizzing around a place called Skate Country in New Orleans. I loved the freedom of doing figure eights to Olivia Newton John or couples skating to the Bee Gees. But when I entered the Hunter College gym this spring for the Gotham Girls Roller Derby home season opener, I instantly knew it was going to be so much better than Skate Country.
